The First Lesson of the Gatekeeper

The Gatekeeper's First Lesson is this: The head cannot hear until the heart has listened.

This lesson applies to all of the ancient wisdoms. In receiving the teachings of the ancient wisdoms, it will most likely be that although you will read and understand the words, you will not take them up as your own personal truth until something significant occurs in your life relative to that particular wisdom.

For those wisdoms that you can take up as a personal truth immediately upon reading it, most likely some event has already occurred in your life circle relevant to that wisdom.

Consider this: a child stands in front of the stove each afternoon, watching her mother cook. The mother keeps telling the child, "The stove is hot. Don't touch it."

The child stands, mesmerized by the steaming, shiny pots on display. Unable to resist the urge, the child timidly reaches upward, touching a pot, and promptly yanks back a painful finger. Upon hearing the child's cry, the mother turns to the child and says, "I told you not to touch the stove because it was hot. Why didn't you believe me?"

Have you ever tried, perhaps several times, to tell a person something, but no matter how honest your truth, or sincere your message, they simply would not believe you?

Herein lies the First Lesson of the Gatekeeper: You can give any person any amount of information, but until and unless something significant in their life happens to cause them to take that information to heart, they will not accept it as their own personal truth.

Let me toss in one disclaimer here that says there are always exceptions to every rule, therefore, there will always be that very rare occasion when a person might, because of their blind faith in another, take up a belief offered to them without question, and without a significant emotional event causing them to do so, but as a general rule, the First Lesson holds true.

How does this lesson apply to us as individuals? In two ways: first, as teacher, and second, as student. In your role as teacher, whether you are teaching a skill, or sharing new information with someone who may have been believing wrong information for years, work with patience, bear in mind that the person you are teaching may not accept or "believe" your lesson or information. That's OK. Ask them to think about it, to hold onto the information, and to occasionally review it.

Then, when it occurs that the person has an SEE appropriate to the information, they will begin to understand, and to believe. Sometimes, the person will come back to you and tell you that they now realize the importance or truth of what you shared with them, sometimes, they don't. It's a wonderful feeling when they do, to know that you, as a teacher, were able to reach your goal of expanding another's circle of awareness.

Bear in mind that the SEE does not always occur, the person may never come to accept your lesson. That's OK, too. Don't feel that you have failed as a teacher. Instead, work to understand that perhaps this particular piece of information was simply not meant to have a place in that person's life circle. You may want to consider reviewing the lesson with them to ensure they received your words correctly,

In your role as student, don't lightly disregard or toss away information that is offered to you. If it does not apply to you at the moment, or if you do not agree with it at the moment, store it away for future reference. Perhaps later in your life, you will experience an SEE that will cause you to apply that information, taking it up as your personal truth. If not, then perhaps you may want to go back to your teacher, and ask them to again explain the lesson to ensure your correct memory of the information.

Perhaps it may be that the particular information offered to you is not needed in your life circle. Don't disregard the information, or try to devalue the teacher's efforts, simply accept that the lesson does not apply to you. The head does not hear until the heart has listened. Good words to remember. Bear them in mind as you study the wisdoms.
