The Tarot
One of the more common layouts, this is often used by your standard fortune tellers. A layout can be one of the standard ones, or you can design your own. You can also use a standard layout, but decide for yourself what the positions signify. In any layout, the cards meanings change not only with the position in the layout, but also with cards that appear next to, above or below them. Readings can be done for many reasons. You may be divining someone's future, or just trying to connect with your inner self to determine the meaning of events in your own life. It is usually best to have someone else do the reading for you if you are very emotional tied to the subject of the question, such as yourself or a loved one.

In the Celtic Cross, the meanings of the positions are as follows:

  • 1 - Present situation (or the person asking the question) (The Fool)

  • 2 - Major influence, or that which covers the situation (Death)

  • 3 - Recent events (Star)

  • 4 - Near future (Lovers)

  • 5 - Goal or far future (Temperance)

  • 6 - Far past, or basis of the events (Sun)

  • 7 - Self. The Seeker's place (Hermit)

  • 8 - Feelings (Strength)

  • 9 - Hopes and Fears (Hanged Man)

  • 10 - Final Outcome (Magician)


Since I did this randomly, it's a kind of reading for my mood at this time. The Fool, always open to new experiences is going through a transformation. Wishes and dreams of the past will lead to balance in the future with a loved one or soul mate. The Fool becomes the Hermit once tempered by wisdom. Though the seeker has strong positive feelings, the seeker fears sacrifice. In the end, mastery over self is acheived.
